How it works
Each issue will revolve around a theme decided upon by the editors. The main component of each issue will be composed of academic writing that discusses the theme. These articles will be posted on the online archive to be accessed by individuals who have expressed interest in engaging in this community. This community will be part of a continuously expanding database (beginning with academic departments, faculty, students, etc.), and will receive notices when new articles are published

Responses or contributions that are accepted will be subject to a selection process by the editorial staff for inclusion in the printed issue, either partially or in entirety. Initially accepted articles may not necessarily become the main articles for each printed issue and will readily give way to what the editors feel are more important contributions from the community. However, all accepted submissions will be uploaded in their full length and content onto the online archive for reference. Those pieces that are selected by the editorial staff will be published in a semesterly printed magazine.

Potential problems
1. We do not want to become an academic blog or journal: Academic blogs do not allow for editing of content other than censorship, and the conversation may be swayed by topics unrelated to the original theme chosen. Academic journals have a pre-selected writing pool, which undermines our belief in interdisciplinary colloquy among the academic tiers. For the purpose of
open{text magazine, these existing models do not provide the flexibility we require.

2. Determining what is academic writing: We are open to innovative applications of academic writing. However, we expect the contributors to adhere to standard academic writing practice. The pieces of academic writing submitted, should introduce the concerns of the writer with a sound structure and, if applicable, cited sources.

3. Determining what a “relevant” response is: We are well aware that this part is very subjective and we will have to rely on the judgment of the editorial staff. Basic criteria are, but are not limited to; adherence to academic standards (see #2), sticks to the theme, enriches the topic, brings up questions relevant to the theme and/or perhaps some questions that may even challenge the theme itself.
